If You Operate An X-ray Machine, IRR17 Applies To You
The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) cover anyone working with ionising radiation in the UK, and that includes running a security X-ray machine in a mailroom, a lobby or a checkpoint. In practice that means:
- Registering with the HSE: before the equipment is used, with the registration kept up to date
- A radiation risk assessment: documented, specific to your machine and your site
- A Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA): appointed and consulted — ask us and we'll recommend one, we work with HSE registered RPAs
- Local rules, an RPS & training: a trained Radiation Protection Supervisor appointed, and operators given proper instruction — we run certified courses for both
- Evidence the machine is safe: surveys showing it isn't leaking radiation beyond its design limits
Most operators only discover these duties at audit time. We help you get ahead of them — we'll advise on registration and every IRR17 requirement, in language your compliance team can actually use.

The Survey & Health Check
Radiation Leakage Survey
Dose rates measured around the operating machine, curtains, panels, tunnel openings, with a written report for your compliance records. Any make or model.
Safety Systems Check
Lead curtains, interlocks, emergency stops and warning indicators inspected and verified, so the protections your risk assessment relies on actually work.
Full System Health Check
Image quality, detection performance and mechanical condition assessed in the same visit — one report covering safety and performance together.
Surveys can run as one-off visits or be built into a scheduled maintenance plan — annually as best practice, and after any repair, relocation or shielding damage.
Certified training
RPS and Radiation Awareness Training
Compliance isn't only about the machine. IRR17 puts duties on your people too, and we can train them.
Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) Training
Where local rules are needed — and for a security X-ray machine they usually are — IRR17 requires you to appoint a Radiation Protection Supervisor, suitably trained for the role. Our certified course covers local rules, designated areas, contingency arrangements, dose control and records.
Radiation Awareness Training
Under IRR17 every employee working with ionising radiation must be given adequate information, instruction and training — the people loading the belt, not only the person who signs the paperwork. Certificated, at your site or at our Hampshire facility.
